We’re almost done with our Georgie-thon series read a long! Most of us are in the final book with books 5 and 6 this week. Some of us, (Sara) already finished the series last week.
Succubus Dreams Discussion:
For being a damned creature of hell, Georgie’s life is looking pretty good right now. Sure, she’s a succubus who has to sleep around in order to survive, and yeah she can’t kiss or have sex with her own boyfriend, Seth, without taking away some of his life, but who said life was fair? Besides, despite the fact that happily-ever-after does not seem possible for a succubus, being with Seth kind of just makes the rest of the bullshit in Georgie’s life better. Sure, she gets a lot of flack from her group of immortal friends but deep down Georgie knows they all care about her and want to be happy. But the hellish system is getting a re-org in Seattle and Georgie won’t be the only succubus anymore. Tawny, a brand new succubus who Georgie must train, brings a whole new problem to Georgie when her imp has to stay around Seattle until Tawny bags her first victim. Sounds easy, after all, Tawny is a succubus and she is training with the best. But, Tawny is such a horrible succubus that even Georgina might not be able to help. To make matters worse, Tawny’s imp, Niphon, also happens to be the same imp who bought Georgie’s soul all those years ago. All Georgie wants is for Niphon to get out of Seattle, especially when he starts to take a special interest in her relationship with Seth.
As if that weren’t bad enough, Georgie has begun to have these vividly real dreams about her and a possible daughter and husband. Dreams that drain her post-sex succubus energy. Which is crazy since succubi can’t have children…right??? Georgie knows there’s no way this daughter or the mysterious man of her dreams is possible, but she can’t help to cling on to hope. Richelle Mead, you are a cruel, cruel woman! Suddenly, all of this including Georgie’s knowledge of how fragile human life is, coupled with their endless sexual frustration, start to take a toll on her relationship with Seth. Sure, I saw the signs even though I refused to believe them, but I had a horrible feeling about Georgie and Seth. Still, I don’t think I was prepared for HOW it would all come together. Even after reading this book 3 times, it still hurts! Richelle Mead has a way of still completely blindsiding you even though you know, you know, what coming. That ending with Georgie and Carter was one of the sweetest most saddest things I’ve read. I love Carter! (no he isn’t part of a love triangle) I was one big pile of feels at the end of this book…
Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes:
“Is it business or Seth?” asked Hugh.
“Damn it,” swore Peter. He pulled some crumpled money out of his pocket and handed it to Hugh.
“You guys bet on my love life?”
“Yeah,” said Hugh. ”All the time. You should see the stakes we’ve got riding on when you and Seth are finally going to sleep together.”
He reached out a hand to help steady me, but I stayed out of reach.
“Are…are you okay?” he asked.
“I’m fine,” I said, breath heavy. ”But you aren’t. I got a little – a little of your energy.”
“A little is nothing.”
“Not to me,” I said, still keeping my distance.
“It’s not your energy,” he said. His eyes were still heated and hungry. “It’s mine and I think it was worth it.” He took a step forward. And I’d think it was worth it, even if I lost more.”
“Seth and I -”
“-are going to get married? Run off into the sunset? Have babies? Succubus! Wake up!” Dante was shouting, his face inches from mine. ”It can’t happen. Not for you. Maybe it can for him – but not with you. Every day you spend with him just ensures his life is going to be as empty and meaningless as yours.”
“That’s not true!” I screamed. ”We’re happy. We’re going to be happy together, and I don’t care if you don’t believe me.”
Succubus Heat Discussion:
It’s pretty much impossible to NOT start this book immediately after finishing Succubus Dreams. (I dare you to try!) So Richelle Mead pretty much tore out our hearts in the last book. But oh no, she isn’t done with us yet! She still has some more stomping to do on it. After the events of the last book, Georgie is not the same person I fell in love with in the previous books. This doesn’t mean I don’t love Georgie now because OMG, how I feel for her and love her all the same. Maybe even more! We definitely get a darker Georgie this time around. Georgie is hurt, and confused, and pissed the fuck off! While before, she only took her hits when she needed them, and tried to get them from scum guys (she couldn’t bring herself to take life away from the good guys), this time, she is out with a vengeance. Armed with a bad attitude, alcohol, cigarettes and an endless supply of victims in her wake, Georgie has pushed her luck too far when her bad attitude starts to annoy even her boss, Jerome. When he outsources her to the archdemon in Vancouver, this gives Georgie some much needed distance.
But when Jerome gets summoned and Georgie and all her Seattle-based immortal friends are cut off from their powers, her trip gets cut short. While her vampire friends are enjoying being able to go out into the sun for the time being, Georgie is left with frizzy hair from her lack of being able to shape shift. When Hugh points out that her shape shifting abilities aren’t the only power she’s cut off from but also her succubus stealing energy powers, Georgie (and me) can’t help but to hope. Now she can finally have sex with Seth without taking away any of his life. Too bad View Spoiler » Seth is in another relationship. « Hide Spoiler Ugh, Richelle, I want to hate you for this!
Ugh, between Georgie’s new dark outlook on life, her ever confusing relationship with Seth, the loos of Georgie’s powers and the reappearance of an old character, this book was one big roller coaster of emotions! It’s intense and emotional. Then of course, there’s THAT moment which left us screaming ‘FINALLLLLY!’ It was so worth the wait…until Richelle had to go and crush us again. Do you hate us Richelle Mead??? The ending of this book was probably even more painful than book 3, because it gave us a glipse and flicker of new hope, only to be taken it away again. But rest assured, Richelle Mead does not in fact hate us and the pay off at the end of the series makes all of this so much more special.
Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes from Succubus Heat:
“Hugh! We’ve all lost our…” I frowned, not sure what to call it. Powers? That sounded too Justige League. “…abilities.”
“I don’t care,” said Seth. “I would have done it. I would have sold my soul for you. You and me…I told you. Something’s always going to keep us near each other…”
“You can’t,” I murmured, swallowing the tears back with great effort. “You can’t keep saving me, can’t keep trying to. It’s too late.”
“No,” he said. His heart was in his eyes, and it was ripping mine apart. “Not for you. Never.”
“Georgina,” He murmured, pulling me closer. “You are the world.”
