Today I have an interview with author Jessica Khoury, author of the upcoming YA book Origin. If you didn’t win the Breathless Reads giveaway (which ended yesterday) then you are in luck because Jessica is offering up another Breathless Reads slipcase! Enter in the rafflecopter below.
Book Description from Goodreads:
Pia has grown up in a secret laboratory hidden deep in the Amazon rain forest. She was raised by a team of scientists who have created her to be the start of a new immortal race. But on the night of her seventeenth birthday, Pia discovers a hole in the electric fence that surrounds her sterile home—and sneaks outside the compound for the first time in her life.
Free in the jungle, Pia meets Eio, a boy from a nearby village. Together, they embark on a race against time to discover the truth about Pia’s origin—a truth with deadly consequences that will change their lives forever.
Origin is a beautifully told, shocking new way to look at an age-old desire: to live forever, no matter the cost. This is a supremely compelling debut novel that blends the awakening romance of Matched with the mystery and jungle conspiracy of Lost.
***Interview with Jessica Khoury***
Is Origin a stand-alone or part of a series?
Origin is a stand-alone novel…but you never know what will happen.
What 3 words best describe Pia and Eio? (3 words each)
Pia: sheltered, curious, lonely
Eio: wild, honest, passionate
What is your favorite non-spoiler quote or scene from Origin?
My favorite scene is one with Eio and Pia; he takes her to this beautiful waterfall in the middle of the night, and the water is bioluminescent and glows when he swims in it. It’s beautiful and steamy and sweet!
If you could jump into a book, and live in that world, which would it be?
I have always always wanted to live at Redwall Abbey, from Brian Jacques’ Redwall books. It’s not as exciting as Hogwarts or Narnia, I know–but the food. If you’ve read Redwall, you know what I mean. Except for the occasional war with the rats or the pirates, it’s all feasts and dancing and the most scrumptious food you can imagine!
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
Many people are surprised to hear I am just as much of a jock as I am the typical hermit writer. I love soccer and have played since I was eight years old. I can turn off my shy, quiet writer self and become a loud, obnoxious, very competitive athlete at a moment’s notice. If you ever see me in my soccer cleats–watch out!
Can you tell us your most rewarding experience since being published?
I have enjoyed every part of this process, but in particular is the great honor of getting to do what I love for a living. I was able to quit working last December, and have been writing full-time ever since. There is nothing so sweet and fulfilling as combining your career with your passion.
Describe your book in 10 words or less…
Immortality. Jungle. Science. Girl. Boy. Secrets. Lies. Anacondas. Jaguars. Love.
Thanks so much, Nereyda! I am so honored to be on your blog! =)
