Venom: Secrets of the Eternal Rose #1
By Fiona Paul
Release Date: 10/30/12
Hardcover/e-book
432 pages
Book Description from Goodreads:
Cassandra Caravello is one of Renaissance Venice’s lucky elite: with elegant gowns, sparkling jewels, her own lady’s maid, and a wealthy fiancé, she has everything a girl could desire. Yet ever since her parents’ death, Cassandra has felt trapped, alone in a city of water, where the dark and labyrinthine canals whisper of escape.

When Cass stumbles upon a murdered woman—practically in her own backyard—she’s drawn into a dangerous world of courtesans, killers, and secret societies. Soon, she finds herself falling for Falco, a mysterious artist with a mischievous grin… and a spectacular skill for trouble. Can Cassandra find the murderer, before he finds her? And will she stay true to her fiancé, or succumb to her uncontrollable feelings for Falco?

Beauty, love, romance, and mystery weave together in a stunning novel that’s as seductive and surprising as the city of Venice itself.

***Author Interview***
1. How many books do you have planned in your Secrets of the Eternal Rose series?
 Three
2. Can you share a small teaser from Venom?
It’s hard for me to re-read VENOM without seeing a thousand little things I wish I could change. But okay, since you asked nicely, here’s what happens when Cass realizes her friend Liviana’s tomb is unlocked, and she can’t resist peeking inside to make sure everything is as it should be:
-Cass squealed and jumped back. The rat disappeared into a dark corner, its naked tail leaving a serpentine trail in the dust. She leaned against the wall of the tomb, taking deep breaths, grateful that no one was around to witness her stupidity.
Ghosts. Buried alive. What a bunch of nonsense. Luca had always teased Cass about reading too many scary stories. Maybe he was right.
She turned to leave, then stopped. The least she could do was try to slide the coffin’s stone cover back in place so her friend could rest without being invaded by vermin.
Cass placed her lantern on the floor and took hold of the stone lid in both hands. But as she started to pull, morbid curiosity got the best of her and she slid the heavy cover down just enough so she could peek at Liviana. Right then, the moon shucked off its veil of clouds and the light in the crypt brightened momentarily. Cass leaned in for one last look at her friend’s golden hair and pale skin.
Her breath turned to ice inside her chest. The hair flowing across the satin pillow wasn’t blonde—it was raven black. And the corpse—it wasn’t Liviana.
 3. What best words describe Cassandra and Falco?
Cass is introspective, impulsive, and questioning. She’s also tall for her age, and even taller when she puts on her platform chopines which she has to wear to protect her dresses from the soggy streets of Venice.
Falco is charming, self-assured, and mysterious.
4. If you could jump into a book, and live in that world, which would it be?
I’m going to say Divergent, because I think getting lots of tattoos and jumping from trains would be all kinds of awesome. Sadly, though, when reading Insurgent I realized I am probably more Erudite than Dauntless, so I guess I’m meant to be a villain. Oh well, villains can be awesome too, right?
5. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
Well, this may seem slightly less surprising after question #4, but I am a total tomboy. I know more about guns and martial arts and video games than I do about fancy dresses and masquerade balls. I definitely never imagined I would write something that earned the splashy title of ‘Breathless Romance.’
6. Who are your favorite book boyfriends?
GALE! I love how he and Katniss are equals in THG. She’s not “the little woman.” He’s not “the faithful lapdog.” They’re both tough and capable. They support each other even when they don’t necessarily agree with the choices made.
7. Describe Venom is 10 words or less…
Murder mystery + steamy romance + exotic setting = just plain fun

About the Author
YA writer. Occasional RN. World traveler. Girl who moves turtles out of the road.
Fiona Paul is half geek-girl and half rock chick, pretty much the same as she was in high school.
Most of her extra money gets spent on travel. She can’t breathe if she spends too much time away from the ocean. She believe in making her own happiness instead of doing what the world tells her to do.
You should friend her here because she is feeling lonely! If you hate her books you can always unfriend her later, or better yet stay friends even though you have different likes and opinions.

  2. I LOVED Venom especially Falco ;-) I would love to be dauntless. I love zip-lining and doing crazy things. I also love Gale. I love their friendship and equal partnership. I really wanted Katniss to end up with him. Great interview!
